Eastern and Oriental Penang: Overview
It all began with the establishment of the Eastern in 1884. When the Oriental was added on in the following year, the hotel became the Eastern & Oriental.
Owned by the Sarkies brothers, the hotel attracted travellers from near and far, earning its place in history as one of the finest hotels of the Bristish Empire.
While well-patronised by colonial administrators, planters and the wealthy local elite, it counted Noel Coward, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Herman Hesse among its more famous guests.
Re-opening in the wake of the new millennium, the Eastern & Oriental heralds a return to elagance as it proudly reclaims its heritage as the premier hotel east of the Suez.
